A baby mammoth from Canada and the Arctic Games: cultural programme prepared for Arkhangelsk residents during Forum

A wide range of cultural, educational, and sporting events will be held during the ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic Forum in Arkhangelsk. All residents and guests to the Pomorye region will be welcome to attend the events, the Arkhangelsk Region Governor’s press service reports.

Arkhangelsk Region Deputy Minister of Culture Alexei Pavlov noted that the cultural programme includes a large number of arts events.

“Unique creative groups that represent different Arctic territories will come to Pomorye. We thought long and hard about the name of the concert programme and settled on the ‘Voices of the Arctic’”, Pavlov noted. “They include Ergyron (Chukotka), Ayarkhaan (Yakutia), Zarni Yol (Republic of Komi), and Khayar (Nenets Autonomous District)”.

The groups will perform at the House of Folk Art, Solombala Art Cultural Centre, Lomonosov House of Culture, and the Arkhangelsk City Cultural Centre.

Pavlov noted that a list of the events with detailed annotations is available in the Cultural Programme section on the Forum’s website.

He made particular mention of the exhibition ‘A Discovery at the End of the Earth’ whose visitors will be able to view “the most Arctic artefact” – the baby mammoth Lyuba.

“The baby mammoth is coming to us from Canada. She has travelled virtually the whole world. This will be her first visit to Arkhangelsk. Starting from April 1, anyone can come view this highly unique exhibit”, Pavlov said.

Papanin Readings to bring together students and professionals

The Ovsyankin Research Library and Intellectual Centre of Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University will serve as a learning and educational platform during the Forum.

Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University Vice-Rector for Strategic Development and External Relations Natalya Kukarenko said the All-Russian Youth Scientific Conference ‘Papanin Readings’ promises to be a highlight of the Forum.

The readings will be attended by students, graduate students, and specialists from Arctic-based companies and organizations working in the oil and gas sectors as well as projects involving the environment, geology, and the development of territories of the Far North.

Water for de-icing

Alexander Uvarov, the director of the regional agency of the state fire and civil defence service, spoke about a fire and rescue equipment exhibition that will be held during the Forum.

The exhibition will demonstrate the equipment’s ability to cut through ice with streams of thermally activated water – a de-icing technology that may be applied when using the Northern Sea Route.

Arctic Games – for those strong in spirit

The range of sporting events that will take place at the 2017 Winter Arctic Games in Arkhangelsk was presented by Regional Sport Agency Deputy Director Natalya Teltevskaya and Vodnik Regional Sport Development Centre Director Andrey Bagretsov.

The main events include the Russian Judo Championship, the White Sea Games, the Vodnik Open Bandy Youth Tournament, the Open Bandy in Valenki Tournament in which Forum and Arkhangelsk Region teams will compete, the Pomor Rook Chess Festival, and the regional final of the Night Hockey League.
