President of Iceland arrives in Arkhangelsk for ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ Forum

President of the Republic of Iceland Gudni Johannesson arrived in Arkhangelsk on March 28 to take part in the ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic Forum, which will take place on March 29–30.

On March 29, Johannesson will hold a number of business meeting and bilateral negotiations with Russian and foreign representatives of government organizations as well as the scientific and business communities. In particular, the president will meet with the rector of Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University, the site of the Forum.

On March 30, Johannesson will take part in a key Forum event – the plenary session ‘People and the Arctic’, which will take place at the Lomonosov Arkhangelsk Drama Theatre, and will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic Forum is one of the key platforms for discussing the problems and prospects of the Arctic region at an international level. The Forum aims to unite the international community’s efforts in ensuring the effective development of the Arctic and improving the living standards of people living in Arctic territories. The Forum was first held in 2010 and was devoted to modern problems in the Arctic region. The second Forum took place in 2011 and focused on ways to establish an Arctic transport system. In 2013, environmental safety issues were among the main themes considered at the Forum. The key theme of the fourth ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic Forum will be ‘People and the Arctic’.
