Russian Arctic National Park has obtained all the approvals needed to create a protected zone on Novaya Zemlya and expects this zone to be established before the end of 2017.

Specially protected natural territories consist of areas of land that are home to natural habitats and features with a special sort of nature-oriented, scientific, cultural, aesthetic, recreational, or health value for which a special protection regime is established.

Russian Arctic National Park will exceed 9 million hectares as a result of the establishment of the protected area, making it the largest protected natural area in the world.
