Yakutia to receive over RUB 1 bn to support reindeer herders and fishermen in 2018
The authorities of Yakutia will spend more than RUB 1 billion on the development of traditional industries of the North in 2018, including RUB 700 million to develop reindeer breeding, the press service of the Yakutia Head and Government said on Tuesday.
In particular, more than RUB 700 million will be spent on preserving northern domestic reindeer. According to the State Committee for Arctic Affairs, 106 households and clans in Yakutia communities are engaged in reindeer herding with this industry employing 1,792 people. Yakutia is home to more than 150,000 reindeer.
In addition, RUB 86 million has been earmarked in the state budget to increase the fish catch and commercial fish farming in 2018. Over the past few years, over 100 fishery facilities in the northern regions have been modernized using budgetary funds. Another 15 facilities are to be build or reconstructed in 2018, according to the report.
