Arkhangelsk Hosts Meeting on Preparations for the International Arctic Forum

On 28 September Arkhangelsk hosted an inter-agency meeting on preparations for and organization of the 5^th ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic Forum, chaired by Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation and Secretary of the Forum’s Organizing Committee.

During the meeting, participants discussed issues relating to preparing the venue and exhibition areas for the event, and further improvements to Arkhangelsk’s logistics infrastructure. The decision was taken to carry out improvement work of the International airport Arkhangelsk. Participants talked through details of the venue’s layout for the business programme. The Arkhangelsk Drama Theatre was selected as the venue for the plenary session, as in 2017. Heads of regional agencies were instructed to take a role in work to plan, position, and erect structures in the exhibition area for a presentation on the potential socio-economic development of the Arctic area.

Anton Kobyakov urged those in attendance to call upon all the resources they have at their disposal: “The issues we have discussed today should be dealt with over this coming month. Our ability to do this is what will define the level at which the International Arctic Forum is held in 2019, and consequently, the development of the Russian Arctic and the Arkhangelsk Region. I also ask you to focus on the exhibition elements, since they usually attract particular attention from Forum attendees. And it is also important from the perspective of gaining greater interest in and understanding of Arctic development among the public as a whole.”

The ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic Forum takes place once every two years. It is the largest platform for the joint discussion of current issues and opportunities relating to Arctic development between Russian and international partners. From 3 to 6 October, the Russian Energy Week Forum will take place in Moscow, participants will again focus on the opportunities and potential of the Russian Arctic.
