Arkhangelsk to Host Student Arctic Ecology Summit

The International Student Summit on Arctic Environment Conservation and Maintenance will take place from 27 June to 1 July in Arkhangelsk at Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University. The summit will be held as part of the plan for the main events of Russia’s Chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 20212023, which is being operated by the Roscongress Foundation.

The goal of the summit is to draw the attention of the student community to environmental problems in the Arctic and to develop research and analytical competencies in the study and conservation of high Arctic ecosystems and biodiversity management. More than 70 undergraduate and graduate students will be participating in the summit.

The summit programme is focussed on gaining practical experience and will feature parallel thematic platforms, field exercises, and project work on ecology, chemical monitoring, geography, and hydrometeorology. Also included in the summit agenda are lectures on indigenous traditions and customs regarding ecosystems, the conservation of high Arctic flora and fauna, aquatic ecosystems, pollution, climate change, and other risks facing the Arctic region.

The summit will be taking place with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and the Arctic. In addition, the events will be taking place in cooperation with the annual NArFU Arctic Floating University expedition.

Environmental protection and climate change have been included among the priorities of Russia’s Chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 20212023. Given the rapid rate of change to the climate in the Arctic, as evidenced by permafrost degradation and gas hydrate emissions, Russia considers tasks of primary importance to include: the mitigation of the negative effects of climate change, the promotion of adaptation and resilience to its effects, the conservation and rehabilitation of the environment, the management of natural resources, the maintenance of the health of Arctic ecosystems in the marine environment among others, and the conservation of biodiversity, especially among migratory species.
