Session of Think Arctic – Think Global Project in Moscow to Address Russian-Brazilian Scientific Cooperation in Arctic
Participants in the session ‘Prospects for Russian-Brazilian Scientific Cooperation in the Sustainable Development of the Arctic’ of the Think Arctic – Think Global project, which will be held in Moscow on 19 April, will discuss the current state of Russian-Brazilian cooperation in the Arctic and possible ways to further develop such interaction.
The main goal of the session is to identify promising areas for scientific cooperation in the Arctic, including in the economic sector. Russia and Brazil have a number of potential areas for cooperation and areas of common interest, such as working to preserve the ecosystems of the Arctic and the Amazon, approaches to preserving and developing the culture of Indigenous peoples, and energy cooperation taking into account the use of renewable sources.
“The key topics of the session will be scientific cooperation between the countries both at the bilateral and multilateral levels, a discussion of the approaches and positions of Russia and Brazil in the context of climate policy, as well as promising areas for cooperation in the economy, including mineral fertilisers, offshore mining, aircraft manufacturing, food cooperation, and the mining industry. The Russian side’s experience in the scientific development of the Far North could provide a substantive contribution to improving these areas of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Brazil. We firmly believe that the sustainable development of the Arctic region is only possible with equal multilateral cooperation,” said Anton Kobyakov, adviser to the Russian president and executive secretary of the Organizing Committee for Russia’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2021–2023.
In addition, the discussion participants will consider the current state of cooperation on the Arctic and Indigenous peoples among countries as part of the BRICS association.
The session will be attended by experts and employees from leading scientific and educational organizations in Russia and Brazil. The discussion will be moderated by Anastasia Likhacheva, dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at the National Research University Higher School of Economics.
The Think Arctic – Think Global project is being implemented jointly by the Roscongress Foundation and the HSE Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies. Its goal is to promote the Russian agenda in matters concerning sustainable development, strengthen a constructive international dialogue, and offer new points of contact for Russia’s collaboration in high latitudes with all interested countries and organizations. The session ‘Prospects for Russian-Brazilian Scientific Cooperation in the Sustainable Development of the Arctic’ will take place at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow.
